• Healthy Living: Why you should ignore the food pyramid.

Not feeling like yourself? This could be why.

When many people think of chiropractors, images of adjustments and body alignment usually come to mind. And while special attention to the nervous system is a big part of what I do…that’s not the whole picture.

For example, when a patient walks into my office with low back pain or muscle spasms, I do examine and treat them for those issues. But when one of those patients also complains of weight gain, depression or just not feeling like themselves…I know there may be other factors at play. And that’s when we need to dig a little deeper.

Regular or Unleaded?

One of the main things I investigate is what the patient is putting into their body; how are they choosing to fuel themselves? Yes, there are the obvious issues like too much soda consumption or a love of fast food…maybe a stressful lifestyle is working against them.

But then there are the patients who are eating exactly how they should be and determined to have a good work/life balance. And as they explain their diet rich in fruits and vegetables and their regular yoga practice, I have to wonder…what’s going on?

Taking a look at old research.

When we were in school, we all learned a little bit about the food pyramid, right? That colorful diagram that explained exactly how we should be balancing our diets was a lesson taught in every health class.

But as a doctor, I’ve taken a hard look at those “suggestions” and I find them…well…unreasonable. Unrealistic. And, in some cases, downright wrong.

For example, there is no way we are designed to eat processed and refined grains at that level. Six to eleven servings per day? When was the last time you ate SIX servings of bread or, pasta in one day let alone ELEVEN?

In doing further research, I found a helpful article from the Harvard School of Public Health that talks about the Healthy Eating Plate & Healthy Eating Pyramid. The diagrams provided in this article make it simple to follow and implement a healthy diet. According to the article, “The Healthy Eating Plate provides detailed guidance, in a simple format, to help people make the best eating choices.”

Let’s check one more thing.

I also realize that, when it comes to the healthy eaters out there, there could be other factors involved. If you have been taking reasonable care of yourself and are still not feeling 100%, it might be time to look investigate whether or not you have intolerance to gluten. Gluten can be a cause of inflammation in the body which leads to a whole host of illnesses and symptoms.

Testing for gluten intolerance, doesn’t have to be expensive – in fact, you can do it yourself. Just eliminate gluten from your diet for a month and pay attention to what happens when you reintroduce it back into your diet.
