Let's take a look at your fat

Wait! Before you strip down to your skivvies (do people still use that word?), let me tell you what I mean.

It’s summer which means that weight loss is on the minds of a lot of people.

The problem with the approach that many of us take when it comes to losing weight is that it could be a fad. Or worse…we could be basing our diet on false information about what a healthy diet actually looks like.

As part of my practice, I look at the body as a whole. I'm not only interested in how it's functioning with regard to pain, but also how you're feeling overall. This passion for wellness has not only been responsible for my chiropractic practice, it has led me to discover new ways of helping others, including weight loss assistance and body sculpting.

Am I nuts?

I’m working with a very inquisitive gentleman (my favorite kind of patient) on his weight loss goals. During one of our sessions, I suggested that he increase his intake of fat.

That wasn’t a typo. Yes, I said fat.

My specific recommendation was that he increase that fat consumption with organic grass-fed butter and organic cold-pressed coconut oil. Being the curious patient that he is, he opted not to take my opinion blindly (another quality I admire) and do his own research.

When we met again, he mentioned that the first article that came up on his search for answers about coconut oil said it wasn’t healthy at all. That, in fact, it’s “as bad as butter and beef fat.”

This conversation kept me up at night and I began looking up more articles that might help educate my patients about coconut oil and its positive effects. Here are some pieces that I found.

This book by Udo Erasmus is one that I have been referring to for years. “Healing fats are among the necessary nutrients needed to prevent and reverse degenerative disease, heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. They can also help reverse arthritis, obesity, PMS, allergies, asthma, fatigue, skin conditions, and yeast and fungal infections. At the same time, more health problems come from damaged oils than any other part of nutrition.”

Is Butter Back? The Truth About Saturated Fats

WebMD discusses the links to saturated fats and disease: “The best way to prevent heart disease may be to eat more whole, unprocessed foods. So eat fish, beans, fruits, vegetables, brown rice, nuts, seeds, vegetable oils and olive oils, and even some animal products like yogurt and high-quality meat and cheese. The Mediterranean diet, which draws about 45% of calories from fat -- including small amounts of saturated fat -- is a good choice.”
